They were great when you got them, turning guys’ heads all time and building on the jealousy of your girlfriends, but now they’re thinner, tangled and look so dull! Yes, I’m talking about your clip-on hair extensions, a girl’s new best friends. If you love having fabulous, sexy hair and if you’ve invested some money in 100% natural human hair extensions, you probably want them to last forever! So keep reading and find out real life advice that many girls like you have used in making their extensions go on, and on….and on…

How long can you really wear your extensions for?
If you were wondering how long do human hair clip-on extensions last you should know that specialists say that you can wear them in great condition for about the first three months. A high quality set of extensions needs replacement in about 1 – 5 months, but if you take care of them really well, and follow the advice below you can wear them for about 10 months if you’re a hair extension junkie and like to wear them every day, or you can make them last even for two years if you rarely wear them.
And these are the rules you should follow if you want your extensions to last as long as possible:
Skip shampoo, if possible
Clip-on extensions are made of human hair, so you should take care of them just as you do your real hair. However, make sure you don’t shampoo them unless you absolutely have to. I don’t recommend adding a lot of products to your extensions because they can get greasy, they get heavier, lose their gloss and tangle easier. If you avoid products, you won’t need to shampoo your extensions often. And since they don’t get mixed with all that natural oil that you scalp produces, like your own hair does, using shampoo every other month is just perfect. However, if you really can’t stay away of products and you add a lot of hair spray, styling creams or mousses to the extensions, make sure you wash them every two weeks, or even more often than this, depending on how much product you put in them.

Condition, condition, condition….
However, you do need to condition your extensions. Use a deep conditioner or a repair mask for damaged hair. This will keep your extensions silky and smooth. It’s great for moisturizing hair and it’ll get those cuticles in the right place so your extensions reflect the light for that nice, glossy look.
Go Moroccan
Before conditioning make sure you use some Moroccan Oil. Make this a rule and use it every time you clean your extensions. This ensures they’re not tangling and remain perfectly hydrated for a healthy hair look. Once your extensions get dry, you’ll feel the need for adding Moroccan Oil to your extensions cleaning routine. It makes them soft and sleek, without that greasy feeling, and really helps them last longer.

Keep them away from heat
One thing you should really try to avoid if you want your extensions to last longer is heat! So instead of blow drying them after washing, just use a bore bristle brush to comb them, and leave them on a towel that will absorb water so they can air dry. When you wake up in the morning you’ll find your extensions perfectly straight, smooth and ready to go. So you won’t need a hair straightener. And also try not to use curling irons often. It’ll make your extensions get dry and thin and you won’t be able to use them for as long as you want. Replace the curling iron with no-heat rollers for an even hotter look!
Layer your extensions
Here’s another trick for you: try layering your extensions, so they can blend easier with your natural hair. This way you won’t have to style them both too much, or add a lot of product. They won’t get tangled either.

The way you brush your clip-ons can really make a difference on how they are preserved. So make sure you brush them with a large paddle brush, starting from the bottom, and all the way up. Brush them before clipping them on your hair, after you clip them on so that everything blends in well, and again after you take them off, before putting them in their storage box.
You should always use a box for keeping your clip-ons in a perfect state. If you really care about having the extensions for as long as possible, go for a nice velvet storage box. This ensures that your extensions don’t tangle and are kept out of direct light that can damage them. If you like your extensions perfectly straight use a longer storage box. You can also go for a regular box in case your extensions package did not come with a storage box and you don’t want to invest in one. And one other things, tie your extensions with an elastic before putting them inside the box, it prevents tangling.

If you follow these suggestions, you’re going to love your real and you clip-on hair, and they’ll love you back, rewarding you for you care with a fabulous, sexy look!
